1934

75th Reunion: October 10, 2009

Bessy Hanson ’34, Fisher College’s oldest living alumna, was “found” recently thanks to the Monadnock (NH) Ledger-Transcript, which featured a story entitled “Looking back…it was a horrible time,” in which Bessy recounts her memories of the Depression. Excerpts of the story follow:

“Everyone was in the same predicament. It was all unknown; no one had money. Everyone had a garden and people made their own clothes.

For entertainment, we belonged to the Grange and church and went to basketball games. We’d go to dances; there was always a stag line and some poor devil would get refused…I was always busy, never bored.

I can remember when Roosevelt was elected. I can remember when the banks were closed. I compare Roosevelt a lot with the president we have now – just in the way he does things.

I graduated from Hancock High School in 1932. I had a good enough education and I had a lot of fun. I made spending money by doing hair. The teachers were Keene Normal students. They had to be good – they were getting marked.

After high school I went to Fisher Business College. I went to work in the market district, Faneuil Hall. Then I went to Margaret’s School of Beauty in Concord, then worked in a beauty parlor in Penacook, got married, and had children.”
